Do you have expertise, passion and a successful track record in any of ecology, social and/or community forestry? The Forestry Commission’s new non-executive led Forest Services Board needs you! Come and help take the strategic decisions required for Forest Services to thrive and deliver its important mission to protect, improve and expand England’s woodlands.
Forest Services are the government’s forestry experts. They contribute to the government’s 25 Year Environment Plan objective of being the first generation to leave the environment in a better state than we found it, by encouraging and supporting landowners and the woodland sector to protect, improve and expand England’s woodlands. Forest Services do a wide range of important work, including regulating tree felling, protecting England’s woodlands against pests and diseases, promoting good woodland management, and delivering the government’s commitment to plant 11 million trees by 2022.
The Forest Services Board has an important role in overseeing, monitoring and evaluating the implementation of Forest Services’ strategy and objectives, and building effective strategic partnerships to support the organisation and its aims. It promotes good governance and sound decision making across the organisation, and advises the executive in the conduct of business.
Board members work collaboratively, contributing effectively and constructively challenging group discussions involving a wide range of subject matter and people, including technical specialists and professionals. The Board formulates and discusses strategic subjects in a coherent and structured way, and ensures that communication with stakeholders is transparent and effective.
Forest Services Board members represent Forest Services and its values at external events and engage with local teams to help support and promote the work of Forest Services at an operational level.

The successful candidates must be able to demonstrate the following essential criteria:
- The ability to think strategically and provide advice in ways which are impartial, creative and focused on finding solutions that take account of local and national priorities.
- An enthusiasm for and genuine interest in the work delivered by Forest Services and support of its purpose, values and strategic direction.
- Expertise, passion and a successful track record in one or more of ecology, social and/or community forestry.
- The ability to act as an ambassador for Forest Services, by influencing and working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders including woodland owners and environmental land managers.
- Exceptional communication skills, high level of personal impact and the ability to provide constructive and independent leadership, challenge and support.
The appointment is for a term of 3 years. A maximum of two terms may be served. Expenses will be paid in line with Forestry Commission policy.
