Vacancy Description

Following the appointment of our Chair Jo Palmer in October, a vacancy has arisen for a Non-Executive Director to complete our board of directors.  Medway NHS Foundation Trust runs the Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, Kent a district general hospital with a turnover of £325m.

The Non-Executive’s main role is to provide appropriate oversight, scrutiny, challenge and leadership to the NHS Foundation Trust in the pursuit of its aim to provide the Best of Care, Best of People.

The Chair and Non-Executive Directors will hold the executive to account for the satisfactory operation and management of the Foundation Trust, whilst at the same time ensuring the board plays a full role in the determination and development of the organisation’s strategy.

The Board of Directors is collectively responsible for the success of the Foundation Trust, through the provision of quality integrated services. This includes responsibility to maintain financial viability and using resources effectively within appropriate financial controls. The post holder will ensure high levels of probity and value for money and ensure the delivery of high standards of clinical governance and ensuring that all relevant health standards are met.

As members of the Board of Directors Non-Executive Directors are accountable to the Council of Governors and NHS Improvement for ensuring that the Trust meets its obligations and for the performance of the Trust.

Person Specification

Non-Executive Directors play a critical role in the effective, robust governance of the Trust providing independence of thought, the ability to offer supportive challenge within the Board and a deep commitment to health care and the values of our organisation.

We will be looking for applicants to be able demonstrate a natural ability to think strategically, be energised by the pace of change within the NHS and be driven by a desire to provide the best of care by the best of people.

We are seeking applications from candidates who hold a strong financial acumen, this is to support our existing skill-set on the Board and to serve on our Finance / Audit Committees.

This appointee will work closely with the Board to provide the necessary support, guidance and challenge to the Executive team and use their energy, skills and experience to help drive the delivery of sustainable healthcare services for the people we serve.
