The Forestry Commission Expert Committee on Forest Science makes a significant contribution to the development of forest science in the UK. This is at a time of unprecedented interest in the benefits which forestry can provide to society, the importance of objective evidence in guiding choices, and new working relationships between devolved administrations.
The Committee are seeking a practitioner, broadly representative of the research user community within the trees, woods and forests sector, to supplement the committee’s existing expertise. The member will have recognised standing within the sector, understand the importance of science (and, in particular, the work of Forest Research, the Forestry Commission’s research agency), and have a keen interest and enthusiasm for making use of evidence in practice. They will be able to engage in wide-ranging discussions over many aspects in the appliance of research – and provide insights into practice – whether in commercial forestry, habitat management, or arboriculture.
Membership of the committee will allow access to some leading UK forest scientists and provide insights into the latest thinking – and unique opportunities to shape the future research agenda.
As member of the Forestry Commission Expert Committee on Forest Science you will have responsibility for:
• Participating in the activities of the ECFS – including assessing the quality and relevance of current research.
• Providing insights into the practical application of research
• Suggesting ways in which the impact of research could be enhanced.
• Contributing to shaping future research programmes and ways in which knowledge exchange is undertaken
• Helping report the committee’s advice to the Forestry Commissioners including alerting them to new evidence likely to have an impact on current policy and practice.
• Providing informal advice to researchers seeking sector contacts
• Contributing as an individual and not as a specific organisational representative
The successful applicant must have:
• Recent practical experience of working in the tree, woodland and forestry sector.
• Considerable knowledge of the sector in the UK, and application of the work of Forest Research (FR) and other researchers in tree-related businesses.
• Interest in the application of research findings to policy or practice.
And have -:
• Enthusiasm for new ideas and curiosity to explore new concepts.
• Ability to engage confidently and positively in debate and discussion.
• Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. Institute of Chartered Foresters)
• Facilitated adoption of research or supported commercial development built on research
The committee member will be appointed for a term of 3 years. A maximum of two terms may be served. Expenses will be paid in line with Forestry Commission policy.
