Vacancy Description

Applicants do not need any special qualifications or experience as we will provide all necessary training and support.  Candidates need to be over 18 years of age and live within approx. 30 miles of the prison.  You need to be enthusiastic, open minded, possess effective communication skills and have the ability to exercise sound, objective judgement.

Person Specification

We are currently looking for new volunteers to join the Independent Monitoring  Boards at HMP/YOI Askham Grange, HMP/YOI Doncaster, HMP/YOI Hatfield, HMP Hull, HMP Lindholme, HMP/YOI Moorland and HMP Wealstun helping to ensure that proper standards of care and decency are maintained.

Additional Information

Askham Grange is an open prison and young offender institution for women aged 18 and over.  It concentrates on training, work experience and rehabilitation.

Doncaster is a Category B local prison for men.  It holds prisoners who are sentenced and on remand.

Hatfield is a Category D resettlement prison situated on the outskirts of Doncaster.  The prison is on two sites which are four miles apart.

Hull is a local prison holding both Category B and C prisoners, together with those who are on remand awaiting trial.

Leeds is a Category B prison situated just outside the city centre. It holds prisoners who may be on remand or convicted.

Lindholme is a Category C training prison for men.  It is located about 10 miles north east of Doncaster.

Moorland is a Category C male resettlement prison and young offender institution.  It is located near Doncaster.

Wealstun is a Category C resettlement and training prison for adult men situated near Wetherby in West Yorkshire.

Inside every prison, there is an IMB – a group of ordinary members of the public doing an extraordinary job.  IMB members are independent, unpaid and complete an average of 2-3 visits per month depending on the needs of the Board and the individual.

Members are the eyes and ears of Ministers and monitor the day-to-day life in their local prison to ensure that proper standards of care and decency are maintained.  Your background can be as a student, a person of working age or retired.

We welcome applications from people over 18 and are particularly keen to hear from those of working age and individuals from black and minority ethnic communities, since these groups are under-represented on existing Boards.  The role is about fairness and decency and is always rewarding, educational and challenging.
