Location: Commissioners will not be required to work from a specific location. However, it will be necessary to attend meetings and events across the UK which may require overnight stays.

Remuneration: This post will be remunerated at a day rate of £250. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed, including travel expenses and subsistence. As a post holder appointed for a limited duration, you will not be eligible for compensation upon the ending of your appointment
Time Requirements: The Commissioners will be expected to prepare for Commission meetings and liaise with the Secretariat outside meetings. The Commissioners will be expected to spend approximately one day per month on Commission business.

Vacancy Description

These roles are an exciting opportunity to shape the social mobility agenda over the coming years, helping the achievement of the government’s goal of improving social mobility and acting as an advocate for this important issue.

You will:

  • actively engage with the business of the Commission, contributing your knowledge and experience in order to shape and enhance its work;
  • comment on and contribute to the Commission’s major research reports and publications, including its annual report which is laid before Parliament;
  • build and maintain effective working relationships with the Chair, the other Commissioners, and the Secretariat, to ensure that the Commission works effectively to fulfil its remit;
  • act as an advocate for the social mobility agenda, helping to drive a culture of change both within and outside government and building effective relationships with relevant stakeholders; and
  •  act as a representative of the Commission, espousing its values and work.

Person Specification

The successful candidates will be responsible for supporting the Chair in ensuring that the remit of the Commission is fulfilled fully, promptly and properly. They will be advocates for social mobility and help to drive change both within and outside government. We are keen to recruit candidates who have a passion for making a difference and have made a practical impact in their field. Examples of areas we would welcome applications from candidates with expertise in include: business; HR; Further Education; and digital communications. Candidates must be able to demonstrate the following experience and skills:

 

  1. A commitment to improving social mobility and social justice, and an understanding of the issues relating to this area.
  2. A record of delivering change, bringing skills that will complement and enhance the Government’s work on social mobility.
  3. The ability to work collaboratively at a senior level, constructively providing expertise and a fresh perspective, and challenging and influencing decision makers to reach a common goal.
  4.  The ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders. An understanding of digital communications would be desirable.
  5. Personal integrity, with commitment to maintaining high standards in public life and promoting sound corporate governance.

Additional Information

The appointment will be made by Ministers for a period of no longer than three years, subject to performance. Reappointments beyond the three year term are subject to performance and to clearance by the Prime Minister.

 

Appraisal

The Chair is responsible for assessing the performance of the Commissioners.
